Al-Fatihah means the opener. This surah is named such because it is found at the opening of the Quran and it is recited at the opening of our five daily prayers.
1. In the name of Allah, The Compassionate, The Merciful.

2. All praise is only for Allah, the Rabb of the worlds
بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

ٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِين

*Hamd is praise based on respect and love. There is no one else who deserves all praise but the Lord of the worlds.
*Rabb has three meanings in it: creator, owner, and planner. So remember that Allah is the Rabb! If things don't go as planned, say Alhamdulillah for Allah is the true planner. If something is taken away then say Alhamdulillah because Allah is the true owner.
3. The Compassionate, The Merciful.

4. Master of the day of judgement.

5. You alone we worship and You alone we ask for help.

*Ibadah literally means to express humility and love, it is the opposite of arrogance. Worship in Islam is everything (actions or words) that Allah loves and is pleased with. Therefore when we say that we worship ONLY Allah, it means that the actions we perform and the words we utter are in accordance to that which pleases Allah. Words and actions that displease Allah are done in arrogance instead of humility. Our every move will be brought forth for judgement one day, will we be able to show arrogance then?
6. Guide us to the straight path.

7.The way of those whom you have favoured; not of those who have earned your wrath and nor of those who have lost the way.

What is the straight path and who are those whom Allah has favoured?
*siraatal mustaqeem (the straight path): Obedience to Allah and the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wasallam
*alladheena an'amta alayhim (those whom Allah favoured): The prophets, the sincerely truthful, the martys and the righteous.
(ref: Surah Nisaa v. 68-69)

Here we are asking to be guided. We are Muslims, so aren't we already guided to the truth? Allah commands us to seek guidance to the straight path multiple times in each of out salawaat so that we stay consistent upon it because it is so easy to be misled.

May Allah keep us on the straight path until the day we meet Him.
Now let's say a big aaaaameeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen!

(read a little bit more if you want to know what Allah says to YOU when YOU read this surah:)
We recite this surah quite often that these verses have also been called 'the seven oft-repeated verses'. So the next time you recite this surah when praying salah or reciting the Quran, know that this surah is also a conversation between you and Allah. He responds to every sentence you utter so don't rush through it! pause after each ayah and know that your Lord is talking to you.

The Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said:

"Allah, the Glorious and Exalted, said:

'I have divided the prayer (referring to surah faatihah) between Myself and my servant equally and My servant shall be granted what he asked for.' Therefore

when the servant says, 'all praises and thanks are due to Allah, the Lord of the universe', Allah says, 'My servant has praised Me.

When he says,'the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful,Allah says, 'My servant has extolled Me.'

When he says, 'Master of the Day of Judgement,' Allah says, 'My servant has glorified Me.'

When he says, 'You Alone we worship and Your aid Alone do we seek,' Allah says, 'this is between Me and My servant and My servant shall have what he requested.'

When he says, 'guide us to the Straight Path, the Path of those whom You have favoured, not of those who have incurred [Your] wrath, neither of those who have gone astray,' Allah says, 'this is for My servant and My servant shall have what he asked for.'
